Summer storms lash Gungahlin

Gungahlin was lashed by two severe thunderstorms on December 27.

According to the Gungahlin Weather Centre in Ngunnawal, the first storm hit shortly before noon and caused localised flooding as Gungahlin was pelted by 10mm of rain in as many minutes. Higher totals were recorded in Palmerston and Nicholls. At one point the rain was falling at an incredible rate of 228mm per hour.

Driving was extremely hazardous when the storm hit, with visibility down to 20 metres. Windscreen wipers were almost useless against the heavy rain and many cars pulled over to wait for the rain to stop. The main intersection at Gungahlin Drive and Gundaroo Road was just about impassable, as water several centimetres deep caused several cars to stall. The rain cleared within 15 minutes.

The second storm hit at around 3.30pm and again caused localised flooding and problems on the roads. This time, 8mm fell in a 10 minute burst and at one stage the rain was falling at 99mm an hour.

The storms helped push the Gungahlin's total December rainfall to 93.5mm, well up on the longer term December average of 55.5mm.

Yeah, the rain really came down. I had 30mm at my home in Palmerston and the backyard was a wash with water. It will be very green when the sun comes out! Great site by the way.
