Lack of weed interest
Jan 13, 2009
Low numbers have forced organisers to cancel a weed survey which was set to take place on Saturday, January 17, in Yerrabi Pond and Gungahlin Pond. Both bodies of water have been attacked by aggressive aquatic plants like alligator weed and hairy willow herb.
The survey was to follow a short information session providing details on garden plants to avoid, remove or control.
Survey organiser Geoff Butler said he was disappointed to have to cancel the project but the small interest shown gave him little choice.
The weeds are believed to have travelled to Gungahlin ponds through seeds or stems in stormwater systems, from cultivated plants in neighbouring suburbs.
The situation has become so serious that filling the ponds is a genuine possibility.
For information contact weed watch coordinator Julie Palmer on 6278 3309.
