College heads development

Extensive plans and drawings for the Gungahlin town centre have been revealed by the Gungahlin Community Council. The plans include provisions for Gungahlin College, a world class library, tennis courts, a theatre, a gymnasium and an outdoor entertainment area with a stage. The council believes all facilities will be complete by the start of the 2011 school year.

The project is set to benefit the entire Gungahlin community, with the library, theatre, parkland and sports facilities all available for public use.

GCC President Alan Kerlin said the new look town square was sure to turn heads and would go a long way towards making Gungahlin the pride of the ACT. "We'll be working with the current design and open shop fronts, linking with the new library and the college to make a town centre like no other in the ACT". "People will start to realise what a vastly better town centre we have in Gungahlin," Mr Kerlin said.

Other plans include an indoor swimming complex and covered sports fields which are on track to be completed by the end of 2012. Both the college and the library will boast modern features to create ideal learning environments.

Department of Education and Training project officer Richard Winnett said the college would set the pace for education in the ACT and throughout Australia. "Gungahlin College will be one of the most modern education facilities in Australia, there will be a backbone for IT running through the entire college and every room will be capable of supporting wireless internet," Mr Winnett said. "We think it will draw students from all over Gungahlin, it really will be a school of the 21st century."

In addition to students and the public sharing high class facilities, areas as hospitality classrooms will employ young professionals studying at CIT. Mr Winnett said the integration of facilities would have a positive effect on the entire Gungahlin community. "This development will be a massive asset to the entire Gungahlin community". "The whole idea of integration is really exciting, the joint library and CIT facilities will bring a fresh and modern approach to education," he said.

Gungahlin College will begin with only year 11 students in 2011, who will fill the year 12 positions in 2012. The college will accommodate 900 enrolments.
