Upgrades for Gungahlin schools

Federal funding released last week will provide share facilities for two northside schools, one public and one independent. The $2.5 million promised to Gold Creek School and Holy Spirit Catholic Primary School; will fund extensions to current sporting facilities.

A synthetic sports ground with a large fence, a soccer pitch, a multi-use field including a hockey pitch, two futsal pitches, two netball courts, a four-lane running track with 100m sprint lanes and two cricket wickets make up an outstanding list of high-class sports facilities.

For more than 10 years the two facilities have shared many aspects of schooling life including uniforms (other than hats), school events, sports days, discos and playground rules. So revolutionary is the idea of the two schools sharing a close knit identity, the schools were paid a visit by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in March 2007.

The funding comes as part of a Federally funded program worth around $31 million shared amongst 15 projects nationally. The Gold Creek School and Holy Spirit Catholic Primary School funding is the only project located in the ACT.
