Amaroo lesson in 'Aussies helping Aussies"
Feb 25, 2009
The Good Shepherd Catholic School in Amaroo has done its bit in a big way to help the victims of the Victorian bushfires. The school raised more than $10,000 in fundraising last week. Teachers and students organised a fete day, which included games and competitions to raise the money.
School principal Graham Pollard said the theme of the day was ‘Aussies helping Aussies’ and said he was extremely impressed with the student’s attitudes. “They have been thoroughly enthusiastic organising everything themselves,” Mr Pollard said. The students organised a lucky dip, mini-disco, a haunted house and a teacher was sponsored to cycle on the spot as far as he could, raising $1,000 for the 84 kilometres he rode. The money raised by the Good Shepherd Catholic School will go to Lumen Christi Primary School in Churchill, Victoria.
Mr Pollard, who was principal at St john Vianney’s Primary School in Waramanga during the 2003 Canberra bushfires, said he knew how important it was to support the schools affected by the fires. “We learnt a few lessons from the Canberra fires,” he said. “It’s so similar, we are able to relate to it.”
Mr Pollard said the donations and school support the community at St John Vianney’s had received after the Canberra bushfires was phenomenal and he thought it would really lift the spirits of students in Victoria. “Lots of students kept in contact and we’ll be writing letters,” he said. “Usually fundraising is pretty hard, but everyone’s been so generous.” “It’s really in everyone’s mind.”
