Gungahlin growth drives school enrolment increase
Apr 6, 2009
Enrolments at Harrison Scholl have jumped in the past year, leading growth in Gungahlin schools and renewing the need for a new school in the region.A comparison of the 2008 ACT school census, the year the school opened, and the 2009 census indicates enrolments increased by 226 pupils this year. Burgmann Anglican School enrolled 104 more students this year, up 11.6%. Acting principal Bev Galloway said the school was now at capacity except for a few Year 1 places at the Forde campus. Growth in the school has been ‘phenomenal’. Year 12 was offered for the first time last year, with about 45 students. This year there were 88.
ACT Education Minister Andrew Barr said Gungahlin was one of Canberra’s main school growth areas with a ‘massive increase’ in enrolments in both public and private schools. The Government planned to build new schools in the region to cope with the demand. Another primary school could be open by 2013-14. “We have Gungahlin College and Harrison High School already in the forward work plan, but what this census also obviously raises is the need for another government primary school as those new suburbs in Gungahlin roll out,” he said. “We will be looking to develop that work this year.”
Canberra’s north and south also had schools experiencing strong growth. Turner School had an increase of 45 students spanning preschool to Year 6, Yarralumla Primary went up 58 students and Red Hill Primary up 42.
Some other public primary schools recording increased enrolments were Ainslie, up 11; Charnwood-Dunlop and Majura, 14; Giralang and Duffy, 12; Chapman, 26; Maribyrong and Weetangera, 15; Aranda and Hawker, 17; Garran, 16; Wanniassa Hills, 18, and Richardson, 13.
Primary schools where enrolments fell include Campbell, down 13; Lyneham, 27; Florey, 28; Monash, 29; Calwell and Gilmore, 19; Theodore, 24; Ngunnawal, 25 and Palmerston, 82.
Public high schools (Year 7-10) experiencing growth included Lyneham, up 19 and Amaroo, up 107. Dickson College increased by 45 and lake Ginninderra College by 149.
Comparing Catholic and independent primary school figures year on year was difficult as preschool numbers were included in the totals for the first time this year.
High school figures show increases at Canberra Girls’ Grammar and Canberra Grammar; Daramalan College, Emmaus Christian School, MacKillop Catholic College, Merici College, St Clare’s College and St Francis Xavier College.
The executive director of the Association of Independent Schools of the ACT, Jenny Irvine, said enrolment increases of note this year included Brindabella Christian College (up 32% on 2008) and the Islamic School (up 50%).
