Honeymoon ends with a crash as vehicle ploughs into Ngunnawal house
May 4, 2009
A couple recently back from their honeymoon received a shock yesterday when their elderly neighbour accidentally drove through their front wall. The residents of the Bargang Crescent, Ngunnawal, home were out when the vehicle crashed through the living room wall about 4pm, causing significant damage to the front of the house. An Emergency Services Agency spokesman said an elderly man was assessed at the scene but was uninjured.
Another neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said she was inside her home when she heard a loud crash. "I ran outside, I saw the house and I saw the smoke - a lot of smoke," she said. The woman said she helped the driver from the wreckage. "He just had a bit of a scratch on his head," she said.
An ACT Fire Brigade spokesman said the car appeared to have travelled along a sloping driveway before crashing through the wall. "Our initial concern was there may have been people trapped under the car, so we had to make entry through the rear of the building with the assistance of the police," he said.
The occupants of the home were sorting out alternative accommodation late yesterday. The entire living room wall was destroyed, and wreckage of furniture was visible from outside the home. Firefighters shored up the front facade yesterday afternoon. "Because of the damage the house will be unliveable for a period of time until the insurance company decide to take it over and get repair work done," the Fire Brigade spokesman said.
There was at least $50,000 damage to the house. "What was scary was that the young couple who own the place, they've just come home from their honeymoon," the Fire Brigade spokesman said. "Our view is thank god they weren't in the lounge room watching TV. It could have been a whole lot worse."
