Parents book child care for centre opening in 2011

The desperate need for child care in Gungahlin has been highlighted by parents requesting to go on a waiting list within hours of a site being sold for a new centre.

Not-for-profit community organisation Northside Community Service purchased the Harrison child care site in an auction conducted by the Land Development Agency last week.

Chief executive officer of Northside Community service Adele Chadwick said the organisation was amazed when a parent contacted them within four hours of the auction and asked to be put on the waiting list. “We couldn’t believe it,” she said. “We hadn’t even gotten word out to all our staff and they (the parent) had already heard about it.”

The child care centre will be open by January 2011, but Ms Chadwick said it could be open as early as the middle of next year.

The centre will be located just off Flemington Road, adjacent to the Harrison school site, and cater for children from babies to eight-year olds.

It is expected between 75 and 90 places will be available.
