Monster comes to town
Sep 7, 2009
The plan to give Alexander Bunyip a permanent home in front of the new Gungahlin Library is pushing ahead after Chief Minister Jon Stanhope said he was taken with the proposal. “(I) believe an artfully executed sculpture of the Bunyip placed outside the new Gungahlin library would be a very popular addition to the town centre’s landscape,” Mr Stanhope wrote in a letter to Gungahlin community council (GCC) president Alan Kerlin at the end of August. The GCC proposed to immortalise the well-loved character from Michael Salmon’s book “The Monster Who Ate Canberra” after a debate about public art earlier this year. “Its use of local icons gave a lot of kids a hook to get into the book and it would be great to continue to give people that connection,” Mr Kerlin said.
Mr Stanhope agreed with this assessment and said the Bunyip was an icon for those who lived in Canberra in the 1970s and 80s and still featured prominently on public library shelves. He said Arts ACT would shortly start work on the proposal in conjunction with stakeholders, which would include Mr Salmon.
