Work begins on new Gungahlin Library

Work begins on new Gungahlin Library - 8 sept 2009

Plans for Gungahlin’s new district library, which will be co-located with the new secondary college and CIT Gungahlin Learning Centre, were released last week.

The $12 million library will service Gungahlin’s growing community, which is expected to reach 48,000 by the time the library opens in 2011.

At almost 30,000 square metres, the library is eight times bigger than the existing library and will hold 80,000 books, magazines and DVDs. The library will be co-located with the new college, CIT facility and a public park, making this central precinct a great gathering place and hive of activity for the community.

Chief Minister Jon Stanhope said the entire precinct represented a $67 million ACT Government investment in state-of-the-art education and community facilities for the Gungahlin community.

Some of the key features include rooms suitable for creative writing classes; playgroups and workshops; a skate-park-themed youth zone featuring rounded walls and black carpet with space-invader images; children’s zone featuring rainbow-coloured carpet and wall-to-ceiling artwork resembling pickup-sticks; media zone with DVDs and CDs; specialised collections such as the environment, house and garden, health and wellbeing; and enclosed glass space for quiet study, reading and research; and outdoor courtyard space; free internet access and touch-screen computer catalogues; and RFID and Smart Chute technology.

The library will be environmentally designed with a zone control air-conditioning and heating system allowing unoccupied zones to be turned off, glazed windows and daylight shading and low-energy consumption fittings.

The library will also use stormwater for toilets and irrigation and motion detector lights, which means lights will only stay on while someone is in a space.

Construction works have started on the site, which is located on the corner of Hibberson and Gozzard Streets.
