Gungahlin residents woke to a surprise this morning with snow flurries falling
across the suburbs between 7am and 8.45am.
The
snow, which didn't settle on the ground, was caused by a deep cold front which
crossed the region overnight and rapidly dropped temperatures to allow the snow
to fall to low levels at first this morning. As the flurries intensified,
it briefly looked like a scene from the nearby snowy mountains.
This
mornings snow falls were the first in Gungahlin since the 10th of August 2008.
Today's maximum temperature in Gungahlin was just 8.2°C, but with the wind it
felt more like 2°C for most of the day. The minimum temperature was 0.9°C,
recorded as the flakes fell at 8.31am.
Snow
was also recorded across the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales and Victoria, as
well as local towns including Adaminaby, Jindabyne, Cooma, Goulburn and
Murrumbateman.
The
cold weather is expected to ease over the next 24 hours as the front moves
further north and a high moves across the region from Western Australia.
Temperatures in Gungahlin are expected to reach the high teens by Monday.
