If you can’t
remember it being this cold in Gungahlin for a while you're not imagining things,
as Gungahlin shivered through its coldest day since the Gungahlin Weather
Station opened in January 1998.
The maximum
temperature on 12 June 2009 was just 2.6°C (recorded at 3.17pm), beating the
previous coldest day of 3.0°C recorded on the very snowy day of 28 May 2000.
Fog and low level
cloud developed during the early hours of June 12 combining to create the cold
and eerie conditions, and without a breeze to blow the cloud away it remained
foggy and misty throughout the day, blocking out any chance of the sun warming
the suburbs.
At nearby
Tuggeranong the temperature also peaked at just 2.6°C degrees, the coldest
maximum ever recorded in Canberra’s south.
At Canberra
Airport the maximum reached only 4.1°C, the coldest maximum there since June
1966 when 2.8°C was recorded. Canberra Airports lowest maximum on record is
2.1°C, recorded on 25 June 1949.
Conditions were
much milder across the local area, with Cooma recording a top of 10.7°C,
Goulburn 9.1°C and Yass 8.6°C. Even in the Snowy Mountains Thredbo Village
reached 6.7°C, Perisher Valley 5.0°C and Cabramurra 3.3°C.
Relief from the
cold is on its way, with milder temperatures over the coming week, reaching 14°C
degrees by Thursday (2°C above the June average).
